Abstract

The Aboriginal population in Canada is comprised of First Nations, Inuit and Metis. One group of Aboriginal people are the Innu located in Newfoundland and Labrador. Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic in the Aboriginal population in Canada with rates three to five times higher than the national average. The challenges with type 2 diabetes are not simply related to the medical aspects but also to diabetes education. This research project involves focus groups to discuss challenges associated with participating in a diabetes prevention and treatment program. The results demonstrated there are a range of factors including, emotional, physical, cultural and political, affecting participation. In addition, the field of adult education can augment health education to address this epidemic.
